For many years, I helped to manage many large-scale highway projects. In each, good planning made a difference. Poor planning did as well. In the case of the latter, the ability to adapt and to improvise, were paramount. Due to the numerous variabilities inherent on any large-scale project, I became better at the adapting then I ever was at the planning.
Five years or so ago, when we converted the carport into the Blue Basset, Adam’s abode, I planned to use five-inch unfinished oak flooring for something or other. I can’t recall now what it was, but I didn’t use it. Instead, I stuck it under a bed where it would, for the most part, be forgotten. Out of sight, out of mind kind of thing. Poor planning on my part, you might say.
Fast forward to today and the amount of flooring needed for the bathroom remodel is almost exactly what I have under the bed. Matter of fact, it is almost precisely the amount I would have ordered if I were doing so today.
Now, in real life, I have seen folks take credit for happenstances such as this but that is not my style to do so. Instead, I will simply chalk it up to good luck, move on and hope it blends well with the five-inch pre-finished oak that is on its way for the remaining areas of the project; an order that was exactly what I wanted but only came about by a series of fortunate occurrences. The Gods of Flooring seem to be on my side for the time being.
