The Sequence of a Smile: A Valentine story, short and sweet.

This photo was taken yesterday morning. It was a typical morning consisting of coffee and our comparing notes on the transgressions committed by one of our many children the night before. Most days these conversations are dominated by talks of Sally or Adam. This day was no exception except for the moment; a moment where the light, the radiance and the comfort of simple conversation created a hesitation. I immediately grabbed my cell phone and took these photos. Paula was a willing accomplice and despite the reflection captured in the glasses, I think the results speak for themselves.

You see, any relationship has the good the bad and the ugly. It is the reaction to each that will come to define it.  Our relationship began on 3/17/89. Forty days later we were married. There are stories aplenty that I could write about in the eleven thousand six hundred and fifty-six days that have passed since that St Patrick’s Day night, but the look and the smile, that initially captivated me the Saturday night following our “first date”, deserves a moment of its own.

It was 3/18/89 and I can still recall with absolute clarity the “look” captured in these photos. It was spellbinding then and despite the countless times seen since, it has stopped me in my tracks once again.  I can’t say how anyone else reacts to a moment such as this. I can’t even say for certain how many, after nearly thirty-two years of marriage, still have these moments. I can say with certainty that in this case, I was transported along a journey of memories that span all the good and all the bad and all the ugly that has come to define us. I smiled at the recollection of this journey yesterday just as I am smiling once again today.

Though our relationship be a far cry from perfect and even though she continues to further escalate her meanness towards me, I can’t wait for the next time a moment such as this occurs again. I know it will and despite all the in between, I think that says it all.
